The fittings used in the Oil & Gas sector, where the transportation of the petrol and gas is done on land and under water using pipelines, there are environments with high severity indexes. For this reason, the production of fittings is subject to an attentive analysis not only on behalf of the pipeline builders but also on behalf of the engineering companies, the end users and the multinational companies involved in the project. Before commencing the production of fittings there are attentive checks made on the base material. The quality of the base material, seamless or welded, used for the production of elbows and other fittings is checked using the pipe chemical composition (Mill Test). The base material is essential for the production of fittings because it indicates the scale of usage of the produced fittings. VIRGILIO CENA & FIGLI S.p.a. only purchases certified pipes from steel mills recognised as being leaders in the sector in order to guarantee a production of fittings which stands up to the fundamental requirements for the Oil & Gas sector. These pipes are made especially for hot forming on a mandrel; this method, used by CENA, foresees the hot forming of the pipe followed by calibration of the fitting on a press using a tool for the calibration. The hot production of fittings on a mandrel requires base material with outside diameters inferior to those required on the finished product as well as particular wall thickness which does not allow for easy procurement.
